Apply for a Bowel Cancer UK grant

Bowel Cancer UK are now accepting applications from UK-based researchers for project and pilot grants in the following research areas: 

Improving bowel cancer screening, with a particular focus on:

  • Developing new forms of screening and early detection methods
  • Increasing screening uptake by testing different public interventions
  • Ways to reduce demand for endoscopy tests so capacity can be released
  • Enabling risk stratification to be introduced into the screening programme

Understanding and identifying people at high risk of bowel cancer, with a particular focus on:

  • Improving the identification of people at higher risk
  • Practical improvements in surveillance screening

Understanding bowel cancer in the under 50s, with a particular focus on: 

  • Increasing our understanding of the characteristics of bowel cancer in the under 50s
  • Investigating the causes of growing numbers of cases
  • Enabling the diagnosis of younger people with bowel cancer more quickly

Project grants

Funding is for up to two years with a value of up to £75,000 per year. Funding can cover salaries, consumables (including animal costs) and small items of equipment that are essential to the project.

Pilot grants

Pilot grants are available for up to 18 months of funding for up to £25,000. Funding will cover salaries and consumables (including animal costs) only. 


The deadline date for submission of project grant applications is 16:00 on 31 January 2019 and pilots is 16:00 on 2 May 2019. Applicants will be notified if their application is going through to full peer review in late February and we will let applicants know if their application is being progressed to the Scientific Advisory Board meeting in May 2019. Both project and pilot grants will be awarded in August 2019.
