Intellectual property (IP) policy

- Helping patients and service users benefit from ideas -

The vision for Health and Care Research Wales is for Wales to be internationally recognised for its excellent health and social care research that has a positive impact on the health, wellbeing and prosperity of the people in Wales.

A dynamic and innovative R&D culture has been shown to support effectiveness and create a better environment for social care and health professionals to work and develop in.

Intellectual property arises when ideas take on a tangible form which, in turn, provides the basis for innovations. Intellectual property rights provide a means which allow the value in ideas and innovations to be captured.

A template IP policy for NHS Health Boards and NHS Trusts in Wales is available for HB/Trusts to use, either in whole or in part. Download the template IP policy.

This policy is underpinned by three fundamental principles:

  • That first and foremost the management and exploitation of intellectual property must deliver benefits to patients and service users.
  • That industry has an important role to play in developing innovations.
  • That individuals who contribute intellectually to new ideas should be rewarded for their contributions.
