Assessment process and dates

These calls include the option of applying to a ‘themed’ strand, which is:

  • Improving value based healthcare
  • Improving healthcare system safety

Applicants applying through the themed call should refer to the Theme Brief in addition to the Guidance Notes for Applicants.

Applicants not applying through the themed strand should refer to the Guidance Notes for Applicants for the respective scheme.

Proposals received by 13:00 on the 5 December 2018 which are deemed within remit will be assessed for their importance by the All Wales Prioritisation Panel in February 2019.

Shortlisted proposals from this round will be peer reviewed and considered by the relevant Research Funding Boards in June 2019 which will assess for scientific quality, feasibility and value for money. Decisions from the Research Funding Boards will be communicated to applicants in July/August 2019.

Please note that if a very high response is received, some applications may not be taken forward for further assessment if they are deemed to be non-competitive. 'Non-Competitive' means that a proposal is not of a sufficiently high standard to be taken forward for further assessment in comparison with other proposals received and funded by Health and Care Research Wales because it has little or no realistic prospect of funding. This may be because of scientific quality, cost, scale/duration, or the makeup of the project team.

Important note: It will be a condition of funding that all successful projects will be expected to start on or before the 1 October 2019, and this is a non-negotiable condition of funding. You should ensure this is worked into your project plan as extensions to start date will not be considered
