An introduction to public involvement in research


Health and Care Research Wales also endorses various external e-learning courses available to anyone supporting and delivering research in Wales.*


National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)

NIHR Clinical Research Network courses are available free of charge to the NHS, UK universities, and other publicly funded organisations conducting and supporting clinical research.

Medical Research Council (MRC)

MRC e-learning courses are free for all (once you have set up an account or used your login). Each module aims to provide you with an understanding of the subject area and, where the course is assessed, there is the option to print a certificate when you pass.

Health Research Authority

The Health Research Authority has developed a number of e-learning modules as an aid for researchers, R&D staff, study sponsors, research ethics committee members and the wider research community.

The modules are relevant to all four nations of the UK and cover key areas of research regulation, helping to protect and promote the interests of patients and the public in health and care research.

The first three topics to be released are:

  • research involving exposure to ionising radiation 
  • confidentiality and information governance considerations in research
