Discover your role in health and social care research

Developing our ambitions for public engagement and public involvement in health and social care research

In 2019, Health and Care Research Wales began to seek input around our objectives for the role of the public in health and social care research in Wales during the next strategic period (2020-2025). Embracing the UK Standards for Public Involvement, we decided early on in the process that we were eager to do this in as co-productive and shared a way as possible.

Through discussions with our Public Involvement Delivery Board, a ‘statement of intent’ was drafted which was then opened to discussion and suggestions at a workshop in the summer. This workshop was attended by various public members and PPI (patient and public involvement) leads from across the Health and Care Research Wales system. The outcome of this workshop resulted in the statement being refined into a draft ambitions/vision document, titled ‘Discover Your Role in Health and Social Care Research’.

We consulted on the ‘Discover Your Role in Health and Social Care Research through October-December 2019, via an online survey and three open-invitation workshops. These events were held with the intention of using a ‘community of practice’ concept, in order to develop a shared purpose and collective responsibility for developing the public involvement agenda that considers the requirements and perspectives of the whole research system. These events were extremely illuminating and helpful and we are very grateful to all those who took the time to attend and contribute, as well as those who offered their feedback through the online survey. A summary of the key suggestions raised in these workshops is available to download (pdf).

In early 2020, we will be holding additional ‘community of practice’ events in Swansea and Bangor to provide an opportunity for further engagement as part of the process to firm up the plan for public involvement and engagement across Health and Care Research Wales.
