Discover your role in health and social care research

Developing our ambitions for public engagement and public involvement in health and social care research

Health and Care Research Wales is seeking input on our ambitions for public engagement and public involvement in health and social care research, set out in our ambitions document Discover your role in health and social care research.

To do this, we are doing two things:

  1. Consulting with a wide range of individuals and groups, using a short questionnaire to get feedback; and

  2. Establishing a ‘community of practice’, offering an open invitation for groups and individuals interested in this work to attend a series of events that will help create the plan for actions and activities to make the ambitions a reality. A community of practice is a way of working by forming a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

The online consultation for feedback on the draft Discover Your Role document has now closed.

However, if you would like to provide additional comments on our wider aims around public involvement and engagement, the individual ambitions (Engaged, Embedded, Empowered and Evidenced) or the main issues/challenges to making both of these a reality, we would welcome you to contact at discoveryourrole@gov.wales. A form containing the online survey questions is available to download that may also be submitted

We will be reviewing responses submitted via the survey on an ongoing basis throughout the consultation period, and will be feeding in ideas and suggestions from survey responses into the discussion at community of practice events. We therefore encourage people to respond to the survey at the earliest opportunity, and we are happy to receive multiple responses from individuals/groups throughout the consultation period.

Community of Practice events

Colleagues from Health and Care Research Wales will be meeting with groups and individuals about the ambitions during the consultation period, in addition to hosting a series of ‘Community of Practice’ open events. These events will be the main mechanism for Health and Care Research Wales to engage coproductively with the research community and the public to shape future plans around Public Involvement and Engagement in Health and Social Care research.

Each Community of Practice event will focus on two of the four ambitions from the 'Discover Your Role' document, before summarising discussions and looking at practical next steps in the final workshop. They will be held on the following dates at the Jurys Inn Hotel in Cardiff City Centre:

  • 14 October – ‘Embedded’ and ‘Evidenced’ agenda
  • 4 November – ‘Engaged’ and ‘Empowered’ agenda
  • 9 December – Conclusions and next steps agenda

An agenda is available alongside the process for registering for the events.

Although each workshop will be designed to be able to stand on its own, participants are encouraged to engage with the whole process where possible, including the online survey.

If you would like to contact Health and Care Research Wales about this consultation, or to register your interest to receive more information about the community of practice events, please email DiscoverYourRole@gov.wales

Following the consultation and events, we will be using the information gathered to inform the development of Health and Care Research Wales strategy plans for 2020 onwards.
